2017 in Review

2017 saw us renaming the main gallery, changing from the Dylan Ellis Gallery to the Connections Gallery. This name change reflects our mandate to “connect” artists, curators and gallerists.

Thank you to all of the photographers who showed such an amazing variety of images.

New York April 6 and 7 Bushwick Community Darkroom

Pigment will pop up at the Bushwick Community Darkroom April 6 and 7 2018. These dates were chosen so that participating artists who wish to visit the city during the exhibition can attend The Photography Show presented by AIPAD.

Toronto | May 2-June 29 Lonsdale Gallery

The prints will return to Toronto where they will become a part of Red Light, an exhibition at Lonsdale Gallery. This juried salon show will exclusively feature alternative prints by artists from around the world. Red Light is a feature show in the CONTACT Photo Festival.

Application process

Each print will be approximately 11×14, fitting into a 16×20 presentation matt. For installation purposes, while in New York, they will be displayed matted. For the Lonsdale Gallery show, they will be framed in our rental frames.

What is Connections?

We believe that expanding a photographer’s reach is beneficial to professional growth. Getting outside of one’s community and having fresh eyes looking at new work and getting feedback. Our main goal is to create a network of photographers and galleries that can work together to showcase photography.

Our first connection was with L’Espace Contemporain in Montreal where we have sent photographers to exhibit work, and have brought photographers here to Toronto.

2017 projects include the Alternative Photo Revolution that went to Glen Echo, Maryland and New Orleans, and was a part of the CONTACT Photo Festival. In the fall we took Kindred, a portrait exhibition, to Montreal then installed here at the Connections Gallery in November.

Why Alt Printing

We know that through exhaustive research on print permanence that the noble metals of platinum palladium will not fade, in fact the paper will decompose before the metal will go away. Platinum palladium and gum over palladium have the look, texture and feeling of work done in the very beginning of photographic printmaking. Contemporary prints cannot give us the colour palette and physical sense that these two processes offer. In all cases the base paper is Hahnemühle Platinum, a very lovely 100% rag paper. The noble metal of platinum palladium sinks into the very fabric of this paper and any resulting pigment is layered on top for an exquisite image.

What is Connections?

CONNECTIONS LOGO.png

We are undergoing a lot of changes here at 1840 Danforth! We have a new brand name, Alternative Photo Services, which encompasses the gallery, print shop and pop up shows. Within this new brand is Connections.

Carissa and Bob are very excited about this new venture, and hope you are too! Here they give a bit of history surrounding Connections, and what to expect!

Bob

How did Connections come to be?

Connections is Carissa’s name, but the concept is a very long time coming for me.

When I started my company in 1991 I only did film and contacts.  My loyal customers have kept asking me to do more, like print portfolios, print exhibits, frame and mount, this led to the Elevator Gallery at 9 Davies in 1998. This experience showed me the difficulties of running a gallery but as well the need for a place for photographers to exhibit.

Now we see the need for our artists to exhibit and be known in other markets, which enhances their visibility and builds solid CV’s and reputation as a reliable working photographer who exhibits work.

The move to the Danforth, and building the gallery (which is above our printing and framing facility) was the first step.

The addition of Carissa and her marketing abilities allowed us to first work with groups in Montreal, now Washington, New Orleans and five other locations swirling around in her brain.
