What is your process

My process is one of great searching for a something in nature, uncluttered, yet in perfect balance, that best represents the essence of the world. I try to look for the small, overlooked aspects, and rarely the obvious. These elements can be found everywhere, but they are often lost among nature’s or manmade chaos, so it is difficult to find them in a way that they can be isolated and shown to the viewer. My motto is “as little as possible, as much as necessary” leading to the perfect balance between too little and too much. I often find myself, like a painter, subtracting from what I see, whether it’s in the camera using camera placement, darkness, fog or a snow storm to hide or reveal “just enough”. Later, on the computer, I often subtract clutter that distracts; clutter that when looking at the scene, the eye may see but the mind ignores. I often photograph in the winter on snow, using its lightness, along with the sky, as an empty canvas, only adding the “brush strokes” of the objects that I want to show.

What is your process?

For several years now I have been pursuing my own creative vision, looking for ways to break the rules of traditional photography and transport the viewer to an alternate, more abstract reality. I think this quote by actress Mary Lou Cook says a lot “Creativity is inventing, experimenting, growing, taking risks, breaking the rules, making mistakes and having fun”.
My work has evolved from blending multiple images into collage-like works using Photoshop to – more recently – capturing fragmented images in-camera.

Do you see common themes in all of your work?

Whether photographing nature, people or the city streets the common theme is to explore time space and motion.

In your opinion, what makes an image powerful.

There are many elements that make a good picture, it can be the quality of the light, the angle, the subject matter, the overall composition.
Ultimately a good photograph, in my opinion, is one that makes people stop, take a second look and ask questions. It should communicate something to the viewer, draw them in, tell a story, and arouse some emotion.

Call for Submissions: Noir/Chroma

The Connections Gallery is seeking submissions for a two month exhibition in early 2019.

This exhibition, Noir/Chroma, showcases exquisite black and white images and images exploring colour. No specific theme.

Photographers will each have one 30″x37″ mounted print.

This exhibition is being printed in its entirety by Bob Carnie, each photographer will receive their mounted print once the show comes down. There are two choices for production methods of images. The hybrid historical-contemporary Lambda will be used to produce the black and white silver gelatin prints, or artists can have their work printed via inkjet for black/white and colour. Bob will work together with the photographers to choose their best image and printing method. Promoting the printer/photographer dynamic, printing will be a collaborative effort.

Logistics

Each artist will have either:

1- 28×28” approx. Lambda print mounted on 30″x37″ art board

OR

1- 30″x37″ inkjet print mounted on the same size board

Exhibition fee + Production: $700 plus tax

Portfolio Workshop December 2018

What: Portfolio Workshop

Where: Alternative Photo Services at 1840 Danforth Ave, Toronto

When: December 27-December 30 2018

Spots: Minimum 4 maximum 6

Cost: $1,000 plus tax + materials (material list provided upon request)

This workshop is for anyone who is looking to build a portfolio of alternative prints. Students will be printing their own work under the guidance of printer Bob Carnie using gum bichromate and/or platinum palladium.

Print sizes range from 8×10 all the way up to 20×28.

Once the prints are finished, they will be custom matted using cotton rag 4 ply board.

How has your process changed over your career as a photographer?

I believe a good image should not only contain information that invites reflection, but also be aesthetically pleasing and trigger emotion. It must be self-explanatory, and not require words. In my practice, photography is a means of recording a scene directly, without artifice. The image is constructed when it is shot, and not subjected to major modifications afterwards. This concept of photography respects the ethics of photojournalism and the documentary process. Subjectivity and creativity are expressed in the choices made and in the very act of photographing and not in subsequent image alteration.

Bio

Jean-François Leblanc has dedicated himself to photography since 1982, when he got his
Bachelor’s degree in Communications at l’Université du Québec à Montréal. He started his career as a photographer while working for many neighborhood community newspapers in Montreal. In 1984, he became the official photographer of Montreal’s International Jazz Festival. In 1987, while working full-time for Le Matin, a new Montreal daily, he decided to create Agence Stock Photo, a collective of photographers committed to photojournalism.
His artistic approach has always been coherent during his career as a photographer. The
recipient of grants from the Canada Council for the Arts and the Conseil des Arts et Lettres du Québec, he has presented, since 1984, many exhibitions on his personal projects at, among others, the Montreal Maisons de la Culture network, and also during the Mois de la Photo period in Montreal. Abroad, his work was presented in Mexico during the Mes de la Foto in Merida, in over forty Europeans cities through the FNAC galleries network and during the Rencontres Internationales de la Photo d’Arles in France. His work can be found in the collections of the Quebec National Museum of Fine Art, the network Accès-culture of the City of Montreal ( PADORAC), the Cirque du Soleil and Post Canada.

How has your process changed over your career as a photographer?

In the beginning, I was always searching for the “perfect” image in the photos I
would make.  At that time the process was almost entirely externalized.
More and more, however, the process now takes place within myself.  I store
potential images that only exist in my imagination, organizing and filtering them
subconsciously, yet still aware of the process.  My creative process now is a
more visceral than cerebral endeavour.  Thus, the act of composing and making
a photograph becomes the final act in an process that increasingly begins within
myself.

Bio

I was born on March 24th, 1972 in Montreal.
A self-taught photographer, I became interested in photography well before the advent of digital technology. Although I have been practicing photography for almost twenty years now, it has mainly been since 2013 that my work has been shown in group exhibitions, as well as in duet with Montreal photographer Daniel Miller.
Most of my work is done in black and white. I am also just as interested in digital technology as in medium format film. Street photography, landscapes and large format portraits are the subjects which fascinate me the most. Whether it be in terms of shooting, processing or printing, the quality of my work is essential.
For me, photography goes well beyond the release of the shutter. I try to suggest a reflection or a perspective of multiple emotions upon the human condition – collectively, or as an individual. Thus, it should be no surprise that I have chosen to work in both social work and photography for so many years.
Since 2013, I have participated in several exhibitions in Montreal and Toronto.

 

Service Spotlight: Lith Prints from Digital File

Now for something entirely different.

This image is a manipulated digital image, the file has been outputted to Ilford Ortho Film Using our Durst Lambda we inverted the file, flipped horizontal and imaged to 16 x 21 inches on the film using a combination of Red, Green and Blue laser light.

The film was then processed in the dark room in super oversized trays using HC110 developer, then stop then fix and wash as normal. The film is real film like that you would put in ones camera, except its the size of the final print. This film is then placed on silver gelatin paper and with a large sheet of glass a contact exposure is made and using the Lith Process the resulting image is obtained after the full Ilford Archival process and Selenium toning.

This process opens many doors for photographers who do not have the space or expertise to operate an enlarger, and or may have never made a film negative in years. This process will work with any digital file and is exceptionally perfect for silver contact print
