Service Spotlight: Lith Prints from Digital File

Now for something entirely different.

This image is a manipulated digital image, the file has been outputted to Ilford Ortho Film Using our Durst Lambda we inverted the file, flipped horizontal and imaged to 16 x 21 inches on the film using a combination of Red, Green and Blue laser light.

The film was then processed in the dark room in super oversized trays using HC110 developer, then stop then fix and wash as normal. The film is real film like that you would put in ones camera, except its the size of the final print. This film is then placed on silver gelatin paper and with a large sheet of glass a contact exposure is made and using the Lith Process the resulting image is obtained after the full Ilford Archival process and Selenium toning.

This process opens many doors for photographers who do not have the space or expertise to operate an enlarger, and or may have never made a film negative in years. This process will work with any digital file and is exceptionally perfect for silver contact print

How did you start with this process?

I have always printed in a wet darkroom and many times when testing an image I would quickly throw out an unfixed print as it was obviously too dark or too light after the duration of time needed for development. After a while I started to look into the garbage pile and noticed curious effects that actually looked quite cool.

We are putting a travelling show together that will exhibit in three cities: First Washington DC and New Orleans (March/April  2017) as pop up shows, then back to the Dylan Ellis Gallery in Toronto for the Contact Photo Festival in May 2017.
As you may know our Lambda is back up in operation, which means specific quality film being available for many alternative print options that Bob specializes in. Contact print in Silver Gelatin, Lith Silver Gelatin, Solarization Silver Gelatin, Contact Platinum Palladiums, Contact Duotones of pigment over Palladium, and of course Tri Colour Pigment over Palladium.
Our last two fantastic Contact shows were incredible successes, with Rita Leistner leading the way in 2015 followed this year with Monica Glitz.
Both bodies of work were in tri color pigment over palladium and were excellent examples of what great photography can be.
The idea is to create a large show from photographers from any location willing to work with Bob and create up to two images each of your best work. Whether its colour pigment, silver gelatin or expressive lith prints we will make the decision together and create a one of a kind print that you can be proud of.
Time Line
Now until January production of work. We have already accepted submissions and will be continuing to do so on a rolling basis

Who or what is Sabattier

Sabattier was a French photographer who in 1862 accidentally turned on the light while developing and got some strange and unpredictable effects. This effect can be tamed with bursts of controlled timed light to a piece of film or photographic paper during development.

BIO

Bob Carnie is a Toronto-based photographer with an international reputation for printing traditional and digital fine art for acclaimed photographers, galleries and museums. Being most in his element while working in the darkroom, Carnie maintains a hands-on approach that fuels his passion for photography.

Since graduating from the Fanshawe College photography program in 1976, Bob has worked as a photographic printer. Throughout his professional career he has printed for a wide variety of clients, including printing personal portfolios, private collections, gallery exhibitions and museum installations.
