Kindred in Montreal!

Friday 3.jpg
Connections Gallery

November 3 opening reception from 6-9pm
Exhibition is on until November 29

Kindred popped up in Montreal October 20 and 21st at The Ecomusée Du Fier Monde. After driving the show up from Toronto, we had a quick install before inviting eager attendees in to see the exhibition. And what a night! A full house right until the end. Saturday the show was open for general viewing, the natural light that streamed in making the space even more beautiful.

Overall, the show was a success! Seeing all of the images of the subjects who are very personal to each photographer was very moving.

Kindred is a portrait exhibition printed entirely using permanent processes. Each photographer has submitted an image of someone within their community that they admire along with a description of their relationship to their subject. The result is an exhibition of people from all walks of life who are being celebrated through the photographic medium.
Kindred will first be popping up for two days in Montreal where we have one branch of our network within the photographic community. This exhibition is comprised of a large number of Quebec artists, allowing for a true exchange when the show is installed in Toronto this November.

Derek Crowe is an adventurer, storyteller and trail builder. I am inspired by his photographs and words which reflect a deep connection to the people, the land and the history of the North. Our paths often cross in the tiny town of Carcross, Yukon where he mentors First Nations youth building world renowned trails on their traditional lands. I photographed Derek as part of The Builders Project, a collaboration with writer Jenn Roberts to chronicle the collective history of Yukon mountain biking.

However the light shines on Ella, she can stay in balance. Ella is responsible and organized. Deciding to travel before furthering her education at massage therapy school, she visited Europe, Iceland, South America and then travelled in Asia with her brother, Clayton. As Ella says, she did all the trip planning while they were together. Ella continues to build her ‘tool box’ to help others with physiological ailments; they will be guided by dedicated hands.

This is a portrait of Raul Duran. He was born in Mexico in 1957. He worked for Televisa a large independent broadcaster in Mexico as a photographer. In 1989 he moved to Canada where he began working as a car detailer with his friend from Mexico, Cato Batista. Raul is an artist..each car he details is his canvas. He is one of the best. I have known Raul for over 25 years. He is a gentle and compassionate man who loves his work.

Physically and mentally strong, Patrick Danquah is known as a serious, very private and a mysterious man.  He is mesmerizing as he moves like a hummingbird with clear and precise form and rhythm drawn from his Ghanaian roots. The effect is like fireworks, inspiring my performance and rehearsal Latin dance photography for the last eight years. Experiencing this from the inside out, I also have been fortunate having been one of Patrick’s dance students in Toronto. Here in rest, one still feels his power.

PALLAS 2017

Pallas (pronounced Palace) is one of the lesser-known Greek pantheon goddesses and the origin of the name for the element Palladium. An obvious choice to describe a celebrity portrait exhibition printed using a permanent printmaking process.

At its heart, Pallas is a portrait show celebrating actors and musicians from across genres. It is also an ongoing project that aims to bring together some of the world’s top photographers and master printer Bob Carnie. Each print is made using a permanent printmaking process and seeks to create an enduring record of those whom we celebrate, and the photographer.
